Growing Food - Growing KnowledgeProfits go to Education

SHK Mission

We create original, all-natural, specialty food products of superior quality. Profits from the sale of our gourmet goods enable us to support educational causes.

Priority funding areas:

  1. Successful programs for youth and adolescents that support learning and character development and that have established proven models that can be brought to scale.
  2. Nutrition education for children and young adults in urban areas that utilizes food and cooking knowledge to widen their horizons and expand their opportunities for education and further development.

Programs SchoolHouse Kitchen currently supports:

St John's Bread & Life

In 2011 SchoolHouse Kitchen started a partnership with St. John’s Bread & Life in the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. St. John’s Bread & Life is a provider of emergency food, nutrition counseling, as well as health and social services to people in need. Currently Bread & Life is working to address the issues of the neighborhood’s status as a food desert in a holistic way by sourcing fresh vegetables from NYS farmers, teaching cooking and nutrition classes at the Center, and developing programs that will extend the learning to onsite locations such as farms, production kitchens, green markets and other hands-on learning arenas. To achieve this plan, Bread & Life is bringing together Brooklyn food companies and restaurateurs to advance the agenda of better food security, education, nutrition, and access to safe, healthy, local food in the neighborhood.

SchoolHouse Kitchen recognizes that St. John’s Bread & Life is truly a community partner with neighborhood residents and is creating programs to help people educate and help themselves, which is in line with SchoolHouse Kitchen’s core values. We are proud to align ourselves with Bread & Life and look forward to the evolution of our relationship and the tangible progress that we can create together.

The Farm-Based Education Association
The mission of the Farm Based Education Association is to inspire, nurture and promote farm based education. SchoolHouse Kitchen recognizes that a farm-based education promotes knowledge of food sourcing, sustainability, and offers alternative ways of conveying information to our youth. Urban dwellers today are at risk of losing touch with the lessons that can be gained by a farm-based education so the promotion of these ideas becomes increasingly more important as our urban areas continue to grow. The Farm-Based Education Association helps to create a needed network amongst farm based educators in the US and we are happy to be a partner with them.
